Windows 7 and DVD writing. While backing up photos to a DVD using the built in DVD burner in Windows Explorer when it failed to burn as the files did not seem to fit – even though the size was < DVD size afterwards a number of directories concerned had all fields marked with a padlock symbol. Somehow Windows remembered that files till need writing and even after choosing to delete temporary files (on DVD burner item) and rebooting the files were still “padlocked”. general device seemed to be that this was related to ownership and that by taking ownership this would cure the problem. However I already was owner and this made no difference. Others suggested it was due to the Computer\HomeUsers security group but removing them did remove the padlock file from the files but added a new one to the folder icon!
Solution. For each folder under my Pictures>>properties>security>Advanced>.leave the Inherited box ticked but tick the apply box to objects and confirm. hey presto all padlocks disappear!
My guess is somehow the DVD Burner was locking the files while copying them but after release this did not cascade down to the files (? because the job was not competed) and perhaps deleting the temporary files somehow removed the job but the locks still remained. All this solution does is seem to reapply the original security from the top level but it is difficult to see even fro the “effective permissions” tab exactly what changes.
